PTA fundraising at Longfellow is very different from the
fundraising you are likely to have come to know and love (or hate) at your
elementary school. For a variety of reasons, especially the short time students
remain at Longfellow and difficulties in communication with Longfellow parents,
the PTA has found it impractical to mount large fundraising events like Fun
Fairs or Silent Auctions. Such events require numerous parent volunteer hours
and considerable coordination that we have found we just can?t do at
Longfellow.
So we have taken a different approach. Our main fundraiser is through letters
we send home to parents in the Fall and the Spring to request direct donations
to the PTA. Last year (1999-2000), we raised more than $25,000 through
this fundraiser.
These funds were spent:
 | To subsidize the school?s purchase of a telephone communication system
that will include telephones in every classroom and voice mail boxes for
all teachers ? to improve communication between teachers and parents; |
 | To purchase classroom sets of textbooks ? so that students do not need
to carry heavy textbooks back and forth to school each day; |
 | To purchase new computers for Longfellow?s computer lab ? to ensure
that the computer lab remains up-to-date. |
The PTA also raised money from "booster" memberships to the PTA and
through the Supermarket Scrip Program.
In addition to the PTA fundraising, Longfellow has two other major
fundraising activities:
 | Early in the Fall, the Principal sponsors a magazine subscription drive.
The funds raised for this drive are controlled directly by the Principal
? although the PTA helps with this fundraiser, we do not decide how the
money should be spent. |
 | Also in the Fall, the Music Department (Band, Orchestra, and Chorus)
sponsors a candy and gift wrap sales fundraising drive. The money raised
from the sales of candy and gift wrap are used to support Longfellow's
music program. |
